Portable Scuba Systems for Boat Owners

Hookah rigs and compact tanks solve the same problem in opposite ways. Which one belongs on your boat depends on whether you can carry a compressor.

There are two kinds of portable scuba system for boat owners: surface-supplied “hookah” rigs, which feed you air down a hose from a floating compressor, and compact tank systems, which you wear like conventional scuba but in a much smaller package. Hookahs give bottom time limited by fuel or battery life that feeds the floating compressor and tether you to a unit on the surface. Compact tanks let you move freely for twenty to forty minutes, then need refilling — which is only a problem if you have no way to refill them aboard.

What you actually need it for

Most boat owners are buying a dive system to go diving but also for jobs that are miserable or impossible on a held breath:

  • Cleaning the hull and running gear. The recurring one. A fouled bottom costs real fuel and real speed, and yard haul-outs to fix it cost considerably more than a dive system.
  • Clearing a fouled prop. Usually urgent, often somewhere with no diver available.
  • Checking an anchor set before a blow, or freeing one wrapped on coral or a mooring chain.
  • Recovering something dropped — a phone, a tool, a pair of glasses, a dinghy painter around the shaft.
  • Inspecting zincs, through-hulls and the rudder without booking a lift.

Nearly all of that happens between the surface and about 30 feet, for twenty minutes at a time. That shallow, short, frequent profile is what separates the two architectures.

Hookah systems (surface-supplied)

A low-pressure compressor sits on the boat or on a float at the surface and pushes air down a hose to a regulator. There is no tank on your back and no refilling, so bottom time is limited only by fuel, battery or patience. Established names in this category include Brownie’s Third Lung, DiveBuddy and DXDivers.

  • Strengths. Bottom time limited by battery life or gas in the tank. Nothing to refill. Some units supply two divers. Lower cost of entry than a tank-plus-compressor setup.
  • Limits. You are tethered, and the hose snags on running gear, mooring lines and the keel — exactly where you are working. The float has to follow you. Stowage is bulky. And a petrol-driven unit puts exhaust near your air intake, which is why battery or electric units are strongly preferred.

Compact tank systems

A small high-pressure cylinder, a regulator and a harness — conventional scuba, scaled down to something that stows in a locker instead of a dive locker. You are untethered and there is no hose to snag. The constraint is air: a small cylinder is a short dive, and every dive ends with a tank that needs filling.

That refill question decides everything. If it means a trip ashore to a dive shop, a compact tank is a poor fit for cruising — you will use it twice and then stop. If you can fill aboard, the equation inverts: you get untethered mobility with no practical limit on how often you go in.

Where the Mantus system fits

Ours is a compact tank system, not a hookah, built around the assumption that a cruising boat should be self-sufficient. The Scuba Pack is a 3.5 litre (24 cu ft) cylinder, regulator and harness that packs into an included backpack. The cylinder is 17 inches tall and 5.25 inches in diameter — small enough to live in a cockpit locker — and gives roughly 30 minutes at 30 feet, which is far more than most hull jobs need.

The part that makes it work as a cruising system is the compressor. It is fully marinized — every component chosen to survive the marine environment — and runs off a 110 V outlet drawing about 12 amps, or 220 V at 6 amps, so shore power or a modest generator will run it. It fills at 35 litres per minute to 200 bar, weighs 69 lbs, and has auto shut-off and water cooling.

Because it is electric rather than petrol-driven, there is no engine exhaust anywhere near the air intake. That is worth stating plainly: carbon monoxide contamination from a combustion-driven compressor is the single most dangerous failure mode in this category.

Which should you buy

  • Buy a hookah if you stay in one region with shore access, want long sessions scrubbing a large hull, and do not want to own or power a high-pressure compressor.
  • Buy a compact tank alone if a dive shop is genuinely convenient and you need it occasionally — for a boat that lives in a marina, this is the cheapest way in.
  • Buy a compact tank plus a compressor if you cruise away from services. It is the higher up-front cost and the only one of the three that makes you independent of shore.

A word about safety

These are diving systems, not tools. A compact cylinder does not change the physics: get certified, never hold your breath while ascending, do not dive alone if you can avoid it, and treat “just a quick look at the prop” with the same seriousness as a planned dive — most incidents in this category happen on short, casual, shallow dives where nobody thought a briefing was necessary. Common questions

How long does a mini scuba tank last?

Our 3.5 litre tank gives roughly 30 minutes at 30 feet. Shallower work uses air more slowly, so a hull clean at five to ten feet stretches well beyond that; working hard, or deeper, shortens it. Air consumption varies a lot between people, so treat any published figure as a starting point rather than a promise.

Do I need certification for a mini scuba system?

Legally it varies by country, and dive shops will generally require certification to fill a cylinder. Practically, yes — breathing compressed gas underwater carries the same risks whatever size the tank is, and the training is a weekend.

Is a hookah safer than a tank?

Neither is inherently safer; the failure modes differ. A hookah can run out of air unexpectedly as well, it can also entangle you and, if petrol-driven, can feed you engine exhaust. A tank cannot do either of those, but it will run out, so you have to watch your gauge. Electric compressors remove the carbon monoxide risk from both.

Can I fill a full-size scuba tank with a portable compressor?

Ours fills at 35 liters per minute to 200 bar/ 3000 psi, so yes, though a full-size cylinder takes proportionally longer than a 3.5 litre one. Most owners fill small tanks and keep a spare, which is faster in practice than waiting on one large fill.

Will a portable compressor run off an inverter?

It can, but the inverter has to be sized for the motor’s draw and its start-up surge — 12 amps at 110 V is a meaningful load on a battery bank. Shore power or a generator is the straightforward answer; we cover inverter sizing in the FAQ.
