An anchor bridle (or single-leg snubber) is a stretchy nylon connection between your anchor chain and the boat. It absorbs shock loads from waves and gusts, takes the load off your windlass, and quiets the boat at anchor. What do Day, Cruising, and Storm anchor ratings mean?

Every Mantus anchor size carries three recommendations based on wind strength. A Day Anchor rating covers winds under 30 knots. A Cruising Anchor rating covers winds under 50 knots and is the right choice for most boats as a primary anchor. A Storm Anchor rating covers winds over 50 knots. For any given boat, you step up one anchor size per tier: a boat that takes a 45 lb anchor for day use takes a 55 lb as a cruising anchor and a 65 lb as a storm anchor.

Can you apply antifouling paint to the Mantus Dinghy&#8217;s HDPE hull?

Applying antifouling paint to an HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) boat requires a specialized primer system, as conventional marine paints do not adhere properly to the inherently low-friction surface of HDPE. The key is to use a specific bonding primer designed for poly plastics, followed by a compatible antifouling paint. Recommended Primer: You will need a specialized primer designed specifically for polyethylene surfaces to ensure proper adhesion. Standard marine primers for fiberglass or wood are not sufficient. PaintFlex® for HDPE: This product is specifically designed to adhere to all types of HDPE without needing flame or corona treatments. It creates a binding layer that allows standard antifouling paints to be applied on top. Alternatively 3M™ Tape Primer 94 can be used to improve the overall adhesion to polyethylene) We use this product on gluing the seat cushions) Specific paint options like Pettit Hydrocoat or Polymarine&#8217;s SP54 are designed for plastic hulls.

Won&#8217;t a stainless swivel and galvanized chain cause corrosion?

Accepted Answer

It is true that stainless steel corrodes in a less visible way than galvanized steel, further galvanic corrosion of stainless with galvanized steel ground tackle promotes degradation of the zinc coating on galvanized steel. At the same time, galvanized swivels don’t swivel and corrode after they lose their galvanization. If you decide that you want a swivel that works, you will end up with a stainless one. When placing a stainless steel swivel on a galvanized chain you will expect to lose the zinc coating on the first few chain links faster than you would otherwise, the galvanized anchor will also lose galvanization at the distal shank. This means that every few years you will have to cut off a few links of rusty chain. One way to manage this problem is to paint the first couple of feet of chain and the shank of the anchor closest to the swivel. We recommend using 2 part epoxy paint if possible. This way you can isolate the dissimilar metals.

How does the Mantus Anchor Guard mount?

The bolt through the roller gets tightened tight&#8230; Ideally you have a bushing on the bow roller &#8211; plastic roller that is wider than the plastic roller so you do not bind up the plastic roller when tightening the nut on the bolt. The anchor guard gets fixed in position in the ideal position and the adjustment bolts also gets tightened in a position right under the bow roller bottom surface. Also remember that the plastic pad has two possible mounting positions with the &#8220;hoof&#8221; pointing forward or and the &#8220;hoof&#8221; pointing backwards.

Why won&#8217;t my Mantus Scuba Compressor start?

Accepted Answer

If the Mantus Compressor is having trouble starting or running, first check page 19 of the manual here for running requirements. The most common causes for trouble starting include:&#8211; Low power systems. The smallest electrical systems that can start the compressor are 3000 watt inverters and some 2000 watt, 30amp generators. Please note that we are refering to the continuous watt rating that these are sold as (a &#8220;3000 watt inverter&#8221; has much more than 3000 surge watts for startup). For these minimum systems, you may still try a lower pressure startup. Close your tank valve to seal it off from the compressor. Drain the pressure in the compressor, so the compressor starts against low pressure and draws less peak surge amps. Then once the compressor motor is already spinning, you should be able to open your tank valve. &#8211; Other electrical system causes include use of fast-blow Type B breakers that &#8220;notice&#8221; the short startup surge too much. Type C breakers take longer to blow which accomodates the short startup surge of equipment. &#8211; Low water flow. There is a water flow sensor that will cut off the unit or prevent it starting if water pump flow is determined to be low. Reasons for low flow are most commonly a pinched water line or blocked pump filter. The pump filter is visible through the water tank lid. If you have a low flat filter, we have updated to a high cylinder filter that is harder to block. The water flow sensor components can also get stuck with scale buildup. If you run a half cup of white vinegar for 1-2 hours and squeeze the rubber hoses to &#8220;surge&#8221; the water, this will almost always knock all the scale off. Why can you dive without a BCD when using a small tank?

Accepted Answer

When you dive with a big tank, at the end of the dive you have a big empty tank that is buoyant (for example an empty aluminum 80 cubic foot tank has over 4.1 lbs. of buoyancy). To compensate for this a diver has to add 4 extra pounds on top of the weight necessary to overcome the buoyancy of the body. Its hard to tread water with 8 &#8211; 10 lbs. of weights, so a BCD is very useful as it can really reduce the work of swimming with weights. A 24 cubic foot tank is neutrally buoyant when empty, thus the only weight is necessary is to compensate for the human body buoyancy. When carrying only 2 lbs. of weights it is practical to swim on the surface without the aid of an inflated BCD.

Question 20

How deep can I dive with the Mantus Mini Scuba System?

Given that diving with our compact 26 cubic foot tank you have about 30 minutes of air, we do not recommend going deeper than 40 feet and spending most of your time at depths equal to or less than 30 feet. Diving deeper will reduce the effective time remaining in your tank, and a decompressing safety stop will be recommended in which you wait 5 or more minutes before surfacing. You will not have much air to accomodate this.

Can I fill my tank from another tank?

Can I use the Mantus Bridle for both mooring and anchoring?

When anchoring most people use a chain hook to connect the snubber to the chain and when mooring we recommend using our mooring snap shackle to attach the bridle to the mooring ball. If using the Mantus bridle for both snubbing when anchoring and as a mooring bridle, one would need to disconnect the chain hook and connect mooring snap shackle when setting up for a mooring ball connection. Unfortunately, that means that one would need cut the ceasing wire every time the hooks are swapped and re-cease the mooring shackle again with  ceasing wire.  One solution is two have two designated bridles one for mooring and one for snubbing the chain, each rigged with the proper attachment.  Another solution is to have the bridle rigged with the mooring snap shackle and use the snubber pendant to connect the mooring snap shackle to chain.

Question 24

For the Mantus Scuba Compressor, what are the upkeep considerations of the unit?

Accepted Answer

The user manual and videos on our youtube channel for the Mantus Scuba Compressor list the requirements for running the compressor. Apart from the operating requirements, the tips for continued use include: &#8211;  Cleaning the strainer above the water pump when it becomes clogged. The brass fitting holding the strainer is removable by hand. If you have a flat strainer, a newer strainer is available that is harder to clog. &#8211;  Cleaning the water system of the unit to protect against mildew and scale. Distilled or desalinated water should be used to eliminate scale and most mildew, but the water system can still be expected to need cleaning when water entirely evaporates. Fouled water lines can be cleaned by running the water pump with a half cup of vinegar in the water. Using half this amount for every water filling can help to prevent mildew and remove scale. After draining the water from the unit, the inside of the tank can be wiped out with a cloth to remove any scale or debris left by the water. &#8211;  Cleaning the oil dribbling from the breather nozzle. Air is expelled from the crankcase of compressors on a necessary basis, so small amounts of oil escaping with the air is normal. The amount of oil lost from the nozzle should be negligible for running the compressor. Cleaning of the surrounding area (~2ft) after extended use is recommended. If an excessive amount of oil is escaping the compressor, please contact us for support. If you have a cylinder breathing nozzle, a newer square nozzle is available that reduces oil vapor escaping. &#8211;  Covering the unit when not in use. Though the unit is made with aluminum and stainless steel components, continued exposure to water and especially saltwater spray will begin to corrode the components. Please store the unit indoors or in a sealed compartment when not in use. An acrylic fabric cover (&#8220;sunbrella&#8221;) for the unit is available through our Mantus store.

How can the Mantus Scuba Compressor be used?

The Mantus Scuba Compressor is designed to fill small scuba diving cylinders with USCG scuba grade breathable atmospheric air in a short amount of time. You can view the manual here.The system can also be used to fill larger cylinders with a proportionally increasing amount of time needed.Our compressor is designed to run continuously even in moderately hot weather, as coolant water can be exchanged or ice-cooled to dump heat.The 110V version runs at 60Hz, with a running draw of 1500W. It is known that a Victron 3000 watt inverter has sufficient surge capacity, if you would like to inquire if your inverter has enough surge capacity please contact us or see the guide here.The 220V version runs at 50 or 60 Hz with the same wattage draw.The marinized materials, light weight (84 lbs full 70 lbs empty) and compact footprint (15in W x 20in L x 19in H) allow for use of the compressor aboard boats. An acrylic fabric cover (like &#8220;sunbrella&#8221;) is now available through our Mantus store. The Mantus Scuba Compressor is not designed for the use of nitrox or other technical diving gas blends.The compressor is not approved for pairing with a hookah (snuba) system, and customers who choose to attach the compressor to a hookah system will be responsible for ensuring all safety requirements of the hookah system.

How do I set up my Mantus Scuba Compressor?

Our Mantus Scuba Compressor is fast to set up, as we have tested the units before they are sent out. As detailed in the manual here, you only need to: Unpack the compressor Add standard 30W air compressor oil (in a pinch, full synthetic 5W30) Add the breather nozzle Add distilled water (or reverse osmosis/desalinized) Attach the unit to a tank to be filled and a 110V power source (see here for power requirements) The subsequent maintenence is also detailed in the manual. Storage is also simple as you just perform the setup steps in reverse, and you can leave the oil in unless you are shipping the unit. What size inverter do I need to run the Mantus Scuba Compressor?

Accepted Answer

Inverters will generally need to be rated for 3000+ continuous watts to start the compressor. Explanation:The Mantus Scuba Compressor uses a 1.5 kW electric motor, but the peak current on start of the machine can be up to 5 times higher at 7200 watts for a few milliseconds (read on high torque motor&#8217;s LRA versus RLA). Inverters list their surge capacities in several different ways, but generally they will list a 5 second surge capacity. A 5 second surge capacity of 4500 watts has been shown to be sufficient as inverters have higher surge capacity the shorter the surge is. Looking at the most common inverters on the market, an inverter rated for 3000 continuous watts would be the minimum we would recommend to match 4500+ surge watts. Gas generators will sometimes have even more surge capacity for startup. For example the Honda 2000 watt 30 amp model can start our compressor. If you are using an inverter or generator that barely meets these requirements, you may need to start the compressor at 0 PSI. Connect your scuba tank but leave its valve closed so it is sealed from the compressor. Drain remaining air in the compressor. Now when you start your compressor, it will draw much less surge amps to get the motor spinning. Then you can slowly open your scuba tank and fill as normal.On shore power a standard 15 amp breaker with little competing load should be sufficient to run the compressor. 110V vs 220V: Which to Buy? The 110V version comes with a standard North American grounded plug (NEMA 5-15). The 220V version comes with a standard European grounded plug (Schuko Type F).There are no mechanical or efficiency advantages to the 220V over the 110V, so we recommend getting the voltage option matching your inverter.For shore power, match the standard voltage in your area.For our North American customers, we strongly recommend the 110V version to avoid being limited to 220V utility outlets that require uncommon adapters.

What Size Tank can the Mantus Scuba Compressor Fill?

The Mantus Scuba Compressor can fill a sealed tank of any size to 3000 psi given enough time. Most portable high pressure compressors on the market provide fill rates of 60 &#8211; 80 liters per minute and can fill the full size 80 cubic feet tank in about 30 &#8211; 40 min. Our Mantus Scuba Compressor is smaller, lighter and draws only 13 amps at 110 volts. Because of this the flow rate is 35 liters per minute (1.3 cfm) and the time to fill a 80 cubic feet tank is 60 min. The compressor is optimized to fill Mantus 3.5 liter tanks, which it can fill in 20 min. Will the Mantus anchor fit my boat?

The fit of an anchor on a boat will be affected not just by the geometry of the bow, but also the position and angle of the bow roller the anchor sits upon. We strongly recommend using a template to check fit on your boat.
